Alberta table potatoes are available in many retail grocery stores, Farmer’s markets, and served to you at various eating establishments throughout the Province, and across the Country.

Why Potatoes?

WE STRIVE TO EDUCATE ABOUT POTATOES


Retail stores and restaurants use Alberta table potatoes which have been marketed

through potato packing facilities, where they are washed, graded
and delivered to wholesale and retail customers. Alberta has five major packing facilities

and several smaller farmer-owned packing operations,
licensed through the PGA.

Potatoes are one of the most affordable and nutritional vegetables per dollar in the produce department next only to beans. One medium baked potato contains 18% of your daily intake of potassium as well... more than a banana, spinach or broccoli.

Protein

One medium potato provides building blocks for bones, muscles, skin and blood and has as much protein as one egg.


Minerals

Potatoes are high in potassium and low in sodium for a healthy diet and also have iron and magnesium. There is more potassium in a potato than there is in a banana!


B Vitamins

Potatoes are rich in the B Vitamins, especially B6, thiamine and niacin. One potato has 8 times the amount of niacin than in a glass of milk. B6 is important to your immune system and helps regulate blood sugar.


Low Sodium

Potatoes have 0 mg of sodium. A good choice for low sodium diets. 


Cholesterol & Fat

Not only does this vegetable have great taste, it is inexpensive and nutritious. Potatoes contain 0% fat and are cholesterol free. It is best to eat the skin to double your nutrients!


Fibre

Potatoes are high in water-absorbing fibre which makes one feel more satisfied and less hungry. Fibre aids in healthy digestion along with the prevention of heart disease, diabetes and obesity.


Antioxidants

The Vitamin C and other phenolic compounds contained in potatoes can offer protection against some diseases. Potatoes provide a significant amount of Vitamin C in our diets if we consume them regularly.


Carbohydrates

Carb's are an important nutritional component and provide energy for the body. If the carbohydrate reserves in the body become depleted, muscle fatigue sets in. It is important to eat enough carbs to maintain the body's glycogen stores. To improve your performance, eat potatoes regularly.


Vitamin C

A 148g potato has more Vitamin C than 3 apples. It protects your body from infection and is vital to the formation of healthy teeth and bones. It's also needed to help your body absorb iron.


Iron

A potato weighing 148g has seven times as much iron as a glass of milk. It helps your body resist infection and converts food to energy.


Magnesium

With 21% of the RDA, there are a wide variety of benefits, like nerve and cardiovascular health, relief from PMS, migraines, asthma and stress.

Did you know there are over 200 varieties of potatoes grown in Alberta that fall into either the process, seed or table industry.  While Alberta potato growers produce, on average, more than 49 different varieties of fresh table potatoes each year, the most popular varieties of table potatoes are Russet, Norland and Yukon Gold.
